German House finds a Home at Museum of London Docklands

Throughout the Olympics, the Museum of London Docklands was host to Germany’s Olympic House ("German House”).
The house was open from the 26th of July to the 12th of August for the Olympic team, hosting Germany’s athletes, the team’s daily press conferences and a hospitality area. Then open for the Paralympics from the 30th of August to the 8th of September. During this time, Rum & Sugar entertained 900 German visitors each day for the Olympics and 400 per day during the Paralympics.

Visitors to German House included the president and chancellor of Germany, a number of other German politicians, and sports stars, including Boris Becker.

Fan Fest

A "Fan Fest” area, open for the public, offered beer, sausages, live music and viewing areas to watch the Games. For the duration of German House, a beer bar and barbecue were positioned outside and there was a special two storey outdoor balcony which took a week to build and two days to dismantle.

Sausage and sauerkraut served in a bun was snapped up and guests washed down 100 kegs of Wernesgruner German lager, gallons of Riesling and countless bottles of German sparkling wine (particularly good after an 18 hour shift!), not to mention the three litre magnums of Champagne for the medallists.

After three weeks of German cuisine, the client was happy for Rum & Sugar to return to its signature dishes, on the condition that there were daily changing menus including one German dish per day.

Super Saturday?

On Britain’s "Super Saturday”, the team at Rum & Sugar were completely oblivious to Britain’s successes; Germany won no medals that day so the team didn’t show any of the TV highlights. However it was a humbling joy to share in the success of the German athletes and participate in their celebrations. A particular highlight was when the German rowing team sang with the band, Fresh Music Live, and had an impromptu interview with the singer about their win.

It was a period of long hours and very hard work but a huge success for German House and Rum & Sugar and a tremendous experience all round with the client leaving very pleased.
