Each year, a convoy of licensed London taxis takes over 200 children – suffering from a range of chronic debilitating illnesses and life-limiting conditions – on a trip of a lifetime to Disneyland Resort, Paris.
This year, the excitement began at East Wintergarden, where we delivered a hearty ‘Big Ampersand Breakfast’ for all the children, cabbies, volunteers and supporters, before the giant convoy departed for Dover. Everyone got into the Disney spirit, and there was even some great Disney inspired looks being modelled.
The Magical Taxi Tour convoy was over three miles long and consisted of over 100 taxis, City of London Police escorts, Gendarmerie Nationale vehicles, London Ambulances, and AA breakdown trucks.
Organised annually by the Worshipful Company of Hackney Carriage Drivers, the event is sponsored to cover the children’s’ hotel, fuel, food, and admission charges. The taxi drivers give their time and use of their vehicles for free.
Since inception, the Magical Taxi Tour has supplied over 16,500 packed lunches to children, drivers and helpers, nearly 45,000 gallons of diesel have been used, and those drivers who have volunteered every year since 1994 have clocked up 15,000 unpaid miles!
