Ampersand Placement Students Trading Valuable Experience for Hard Work and a Fresh Perspective

At Ampersand, we are always excited to discover fresh talent and to share our enthusiasm and love for food and hospitality. One way we do this is by welcoming students, usually from hospitality, leisure and tourism courses, during their placement year.


We love the opportunity to offer valuable experience and knowledge to young people just beginning to find their place in the industry, and we get so much in return. It’s great to have a fresh perspective in our offices and kitchens, and we find our students are always enthusiastic, hardworking and keen to get “stuck in”.


We currently have five placement students working at Ampersand. Bonnie and Jessica are both now stationed at ZSL London Zoo, Grant and Alice join us at Buckingham Palace, and Emma is working at the Tower of London. You can read more about their experiences below.


What are you most excited about during your placement with Ampersand?


Bonnie:

Developing myself. CH&Co embraces its placement students and fills the year with many opportunities to further your studies and career. I am particularly looking forward to working in the events team. This is the area where I see myself in the future, so anything that CH&Co can teach me in the field I am really excited about!


Jessica:

I am excited to work with a variety of different people with a wide range of experience. I aim to learn how to effectively manage staff, whilst complying with the company and their ethos. Working at ZSL London Zoo will be a fun and exciting challenge, and I look forward to the responsibility I will take on throughout the course.


Alice:

Being able to get into the ‘real world’ and putting the theory we learn in lecture halls into practice and also gaining independence away from the comfort of student life. I am also extremely excited to be working at the Garden Café at Buckingham Palace. It’s such a rare opportunity to work at Buckingham Palace and an experience I will never forget.


Grant:

I am most looking forward to working at truly prestigious locations around London, with a company that is highly respected in the industry. The experience I will gain and people I will meet along the way will further the enjoyment of my year with CH&Co.


Emma:

I'm most excited about being given the chance to experience operational management first hand and take on important roles within the company. Generally seeing how everything works within one of London's top caterers is so valuable and interesting, and I'm excited that it is kicking off my professional career.


Which high street food and beverage brand or concept most interests you?


Grant:

I am very interested in the implementation of technology in the industry, new and clever ways to enhance the customer experience while saving money. For example Inamo in London uses self-ordering systems from tablet devices in the tables. In the future, will technology improve the customer experience or hinder it, as it removes personal interaction?


Alice:

Street food. I’m fascinated in the many different cuisines of the world. Street food offers you a wide range of food from different cultures and countries, all at reasonable prices too.


What do you hope to do when you graduate?


Jessica:

After graduation, I hope to continue my professional journey at CH&Co. The company allows young professionals to develop and grow with minimal limitations, and I feel this is important in the early stages of my career. Throughout my placement, I will discover what side of the industry I feel suits me best, and from this I will decide what job I feel would most benefit myself, and CH&Co in the future.


Emma:

I hope to work in events in a management position to build my experience further whilst saving enough to go travelling for a year or two.

Bonnie:

I've never eaten a tomato!


Jessica:

I am extremely interested in world wines and have funded myself through various courses with WSET. I hope to use my passion within my placement year at CH&Co and hope I can continue my wine education with further courses.
