Ampersand Events Receives High Commendation at Event Awards 2013

Having been shortlisted in the "Caterer of the Year” category, the Ampersand Events team were delighted to attend the 2013 Event Awards evening last Friday. To have reached the final consideration for such a prestigious accolade was, in itself, an absolute highlight for us. The award recognises caterers for their innovation, creativity, past year achievements and the ability to deliver outstanding events, and we were hopeful that we would make the cut after all the tremendous work done this year.

As this was our first year of entering, we were amazed and thrilled when it was announced that Ampersand Events was the highly commended Runner Up in our category, an amazing result for such a young company. To get there, we participated in a challenging but very enjoyable entry process.

The first step was to respond to two event briefs and produce two inspiring proposals sure to intrigue and excite the judges. We were also asked to showcase an event that we felt represented Ampersand Events. We unanimously agreed that our Booktrust event at the Shard was an ideal choice. For this event we had the exciting task of producing a canapé menu inspired by the books of our youth; our creations ranged from James and the Giant Peach meat fruits to Willy Wonka’s chocolate lollipop garden.

To be named runner up in this stiffly competitive category is great recognition of the hard work delivered by the team, day in, day out, and really is a superb achievement!

For the next stage of the judging process, which followed the thrilling news that we had been shortlisted, we were asked to take our menu proposals and turn them into a meal for the judges at a tasting at the Blue Fin Building in September. For this, we created an Alice in Wonderland themed menu with canapés trays designed to depicted scenes from the book. Judges were given a themed starter served in a “book” to begin and finished with our favourite Mad Hatter’s Tea Party dessert shower which our chef created whilst the judges enjoyed their main course. We also offered a riverbank inspired food station with its own miniature allotment.

In turn, the judges served us abundant praise, commenting on the thought and effort that had gone into creating the menus, the exciting presentation, the quality of the food and the passion of the team.
