At Home with Ampersand

We’re starting to get rather excited about our upcoming "Foraged and Found” themed client event at Rum & Sugar, not least because last year‘s client evening at 28 Portland Place was such a great success and a joy to execute.
To us, Ampersand feels like a family and we wanted to reflect that for our clients and invite them into our fold. Seventy guests, a number small enough to feel intimate but large enough to create a buzz, were invited to our beautiful Georgian townhouse to enjoy an evening “at home” with Ampersand.

We wanted to give our guests the chance to relax and enjoy the simple pleasures of dining and sharing company in homey, informal surroundings, so we furnished the Adam Room of 28 Portland Place with inviting Chesterfield sofas and put out old fashioned board games and activities. Entertainment came from a very talented solo pianist, providing excellent but unobtrusive background music. It also added a real old-world family get together feel, especially when Martin Dibben, our Director of Operations, provided vocals for a few numbers!

We even built a special kitchen in the Sainsbury Room, which interconnects with the Adam Room, to bring our chefs into the heart of the celebration and to allow our guests to watch them at work. Everyone knows that the kitchen is the place to be at any house party!

A small chef team, led by our Executive Chef Gary Devereaux, created treats for the guests to enjoy from our specially created “kitchen”.  The dishes included slow roasted Swiss steak with potato hollandaise, stuffed baby artichokes with potato and cheese gratin, and steamed sole fillets stuffed with winter truffle salmon mousse and served with a delicate white wine sauce. Smaller canapés and nibbles also made the rounds of the room, such as cheese straws, spiced warm tomato consommé, crab croquettes with lobster mayonnaise, and wild mushroom and spinach macaroons.

The finishing touch to the evening’s culinary component was a choice of iced apple and custard or winter fruit jelly shots for dessert.
In addition to a choice of wines and Champagne, there was a selection of familiar cocktails to savour: classic martinis, sidecars, ginger mojitos and Shirley Temples for those who didn’t fancy alcohol.

The event was a big success and we really achieved the homey, relaxed atmosphere we had set out to capture. We’ve put just as much love and preparation into this year’s upcoming Foraged and Found event, so we are anticipating another wonderful success. All the pieces are coming together; we can’t wait!
