The Zoo opened in 1827, a year after the Zoological Society of London (ZSL) was founded; today it houses over 755 species of animals (and some 16,800 individual creatures), one of the UK’s largest collections. It is run by ZSL and helps the society to realise their mission of promoting conservation and protecting animals and their habitats worldwide.
ZSL have made a mammoth investment, refurbishing the Regent’s Building to create The Terrace Restaurant, the hub of Ampersand’s catering services and a sumptuous new restaurant for visitors. The space features a double height ceiling spanning the dining area and a beautiful mezzanine level, which leads onto an upper terrace deck designed to offer unique views across the Zoo.
This grand and sensitively restored 700 capacity eatery is the perfect flagship for our "Feeding Time at the Zoo” concept – the idea that it’s not just the Zoo’s animal inhabitants who need the best food at meal times, humans do too! We encourage visitors to enjoy a healthy and tasty meal to ensure that they have plenty of energy to explore all the Zoo has to offer. The menu within reflects this, offering fresh, nutritious and delicious meals designed just for the venue. The Terrace Restaurant features a clay oven, allowing chefs to produce perfect pizzas and a unique indoor/outdoor barista bar to ensure that all customers, whether enjoying the sun on the terrace or relaxing in the main restaurant, have easy access to a delicious coffee fix!
Growling stomachs can strike at any time, so we also operate an Aquarium Kiosk, Fish and Chips takeaway and Animal Adventure Café, perfect for keeping little ones’ energy up. Throughout the zoo, visitors will also find mobile catering outlets, allowing them to enjoy great food on the go. As always, the best of British seasonal produce forms the backbone of every dish at every outlet, and everything we do is underpinned by our strong focus on sustainability, a perfect match for ZSL’s own values
